Description

Once you start walking around Mortimer you will soon realise it is quite a strung-out place. However, this is only because there is more than one Mortimer! Just to confuse you, the station is actually in Stratfield Mortimer not Mortimer….that’s further up the hill. This walk is a figure of eight around Stratfield Mortimer and Mortimer to help you get your bearings. There are a couple of gentle climbs, as this is the local ‘high ground’ but neither is that challenging. A particular benefit of a winter walk are the many polo ponies holidaying in the fields around Wheat’s Farm.

Walk Instructions

  1. At the main road turn left & walk down to the roundabout. Turn left again and walk along the road up the hill for just over half a mile. You will pass the school and traffic lights before you come to a private road on the left called Kiln Lane.
  2. Turn left along this tarmac lane. Ignore a footpath off right. Continue straight – the path eventually goes through a pretty copse, out into a field before reaching the road.
  3. Turn right at the road. After the house on the right there will be a footpath sign on the right beside a gateway. Follow this across a field in the direction of houses.
  4. At the corner of a garden fence take the left-hand path all the way up to the village. This comes out opposite the Fairground green (the local term for the recreation ground) & car park.
  5. Cross the road and walk to the right of the community building aiming for a kissing gate in the hedge. In the next field walk towards the top right-hand corner. Go through the gate, cross the main road on the right and pick up the path again on the other side. After a short distance another path joins from the right. Ignore this and continue straight ahead.
  6. When face to face with a metal, 5 bar gate and split in paths, take the one on the right and continue straight ahead through numerous kissing gates and fields of horses. Eventually, the paths curves around to the right and comes out in a residential road. Follow this to the main road.
  7. Cross the road and turn left. Walk down the hill until you reach Pitfield Lane. Turn right.
  8. After not more than 500m (and before a house) take the footpath on the left across the field towards a bridge. Cross the bridge and immediately turn left. Follow this path along the stream in the direction of the church. At the church continue to the main road.
  9. At the road turn right and then right again at the roundabout to reach the station.
