Description

The River Thames is the beating heart of Reading. As far back as Roman times it was the river that first drew people to settle here. Today it continues to be the life blood running through the town, although more for pleasure and well-being than commerce. Arriving into the hustle and bustle of Reading Station it is hard imagine that within 5 minutes you can be strolling leisurely along the banks of the Thames, admiring the boats and swans. This short walk is the perfect escapism from busy city life and will hopefully inspire you to explore other local walks along the 185 mile long Thames Path.

Walk Instructions

  1. The easiest way to start this walk is to exit from the North Entrance. However, if you leave the station from the South Entrance turn right and look for the long flight of steps that descend to an underpass signed ‘To the Thames’. This comes out by the North Entrance. From here, walk to the main road, cross at the pedestrian crossing and walk right a short distance. Look out for the blue sign for ‘Hills Meadow Car Park & Caversham’. Turn left following this sign into a residential area to find the narrow path through to the Thames footpath.
  2. Turn right onto the Thames path and follow this for approx. 1 mile, through Kings Meadow Park and along the river path, until you reach a horseshoe pedestrian bridge.
  3. Go over the bridge turning back on yourself on the other side to follow the river Kennet back into the city centre.
  4. After almost a mile, cross to the other side on the metal bridge with a Kennet & Avon Canal sign and Willow tree beside it. Continue walking in the same direction towards a stone bridge. Climb up the ramp onto Duke Street and turn right.
  5. Continue across the next road junction and walk towards The Market Place and St Laurence’s church. Walk to the left of the church and then right onto Blagrave Street. Walk to the end of this road and the station will be visible to the left.
